Wide Angle

Leafless trees are silhouetted against the sky on a quiet Friday afternoon in Columbia, Mo.

No need to back up. I borrowed a wide angle lens.

I checked out a 12-24 mm lens (the only one available) for the photo story I'm working on for my "Fundamentals of Photojournalism" class. Having only used my 18-105 mm lens in the past, I decided to test it out.

The photographs above were taken from my bedroom window, a decent view. I like the silhouettes created by the trees and the frame-within-a-frame in the last photograph. I think I need to invest in a wide angle lens of my own.

World AIDS Day

AIDS awareness flags lined Ninth Street on Dec. 1 in Columbia, Mo.
On my walk home today, I noticed a few dozen flags lining the sidewalks of Broadway and Ninth Street for World AIDS Day, an international day dedicated to raising awareness about HIV. About 33.4 million people are living with HIV worldwide, according to UNAIDS. I was happy to see that people in Columbia were taking part in spreading awareness.

Wander the city

Lines and light — that's what I like about these two photographs. Oh, and color, too.

During Thanksgiving break, I wandered the city with my friend, Lena, seen above.  I brought my camera along to shoot pictures for a class assignment in my photojournalism class. I had to photograph a pictorial, or human cityscape.

The photograph was supposed to be about the color but not just "color of color's sake." It had to reinforce the mood, the environment, the moment. I think the muted blues and yellows in these photos do that. The repetition of lines and the great light don't hurt either.
